Korey Watts admits he wasn’t ready to play golf in such warm and humid conditions on Saturday.
By Sunday afternoon, he had made the adjustment.
The James River High School sophomore improved by 10 strokes overnight, shooting a 1-under-par 70 at Roanoke Country Club on Sunday to win the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame Junior Championship. That, coupled with the 9-over 80 he shot Saturday at Hidden Valley Country Club, was good enough for a three-stroke win over Hidden Valley High School’s Alex Taylor.
“It was much better today,” Watts said. “I felt like if I could just play steady, I’d have a chance to win. My focus was better today.”
Watts said it didn’t take much to be better mentally this time around. By the 13th hole at Hidden Valley, Watts said he was thinking more about going home than his next shot, and his score reflected that.
“It was just bad golf yesterday,” he said. “Nothing went right and I didn’t get too many breaks.”
On Sunday, Watts finished with three birdies and two bogeys, and posted the only under-par score of the day. Blacksburg’s Ty Olingershot an even-par 71 — 13 strokes better than the 84 he shot Saturday — to finish fifth overall.
First-round leader Brandon Feury of Lord Botetourt followed up his 76 with an 88 and finished tied for 10th place.
In the team division, Roanoke Country Club cruised to victory, beating runner-up Hunting Hills by 26 strokes.
